Lunchtime CPD Presentations

Lankelma’s lunchtime CPD presentations on cone penetration testing have been endorsed by the Geological Society of London.

The objective of the presentations is to give attendees a basic understanding of CPT and its uses. They will be able to incorporate the use of CPT in a total site investigation and source the right equipment. Participants receive certificates of attendance.

Over 25 companies have already taken advantage of the lunchtime presentations in 2004. They generally last 1 hour including questions and answers.

If requested, we can also run a workshop in addition to the talk to learn how to use CPT in practice.

Vertical Soil Heat Exchangers (VSHE) - For Heating and Cooling

Vertical heat exchangers are used to utilise natural heat energy provided by geothermal gradient and groundwater which is encountered with increasing depth through soils and underlying rock. Simply put, the systems extract heat source energy during the cooler seasons, and return heat generated above surface during warmer seasons in a replenishment cycle.

BAT Piezometers

The installation of piezometers so they give good reliable readings can be a problem. Even with push in vibrating wire instruments installed using a CPT rig there are problems with overstraining the instruments with the high excess porewater pressures that can be generated from pushing, especially in over-consolidated clays.

Lankelma has recently started to install a relatively unused type of piezometer that overcomes these excess generated pore pressures. The BAT system is a Swedish invention that is used frequently in mainland Europe.

The system consists of a piezometer tip that connects to standard standpipes. The filter tip has a membrane, which allows the multiple insertion of the sensor. The sensor connects to the filter tip via a needle. This can be done many hundreds of times before the membrane is permanently damaged.

The big advantage of this system is that the sensor is not connected when the filter tip is pushed in. It is connected once the high excess pressures have been allowed to dissipate.

One sensor can be used to manually take readings from many piezometers. The systems Lankelma has recently installed have involved permanently fixing a sensor at every piezometer. The sensors then log at a given interval and store the data. Data can be downloaded when necessary, using a handheld data logger, or the system can be set up to send data back via a GSM link.

Another advantage of this system is that if any problem develops with the sensor it can be removed and another one installed without having to put a new filter tip in. The BAT system can also be used to collect water samples and work out permeability.

The BAT system is an easy to install method of taking piezometer readings using a CPT rig. In recent examples the results have been very good. Lankelma expects this method to be used much more in the UK.

Geodrilling 2005, 18th - 19th May, Donington Park

This is the only UK exhibition dedicated to drilling. We will be at stand L5, where staff will be delighted to meet you and discuss any questions you may have.

Open Day - the UK's first brownfield SI test site, 7th - 8th June 2005

Zetica, Lankelma and Norwest Holst will jointly host open days on 7th - 8th June 2005, for developers, engineering consultants, and contractors at our test site at the Enstone airfield near Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire.

Have you ever questioned how cone penetrometer tests are carried out and how results relate to measurements from boreholes and the surface? Are you interested in the capabilities of geophysics to map buried hazards such as unexploded ordnance, buried tanks or voids? Would you like to see wireline and crosshole geophysics being demonstrated to characterise near-surface geology?

Visitors will be able to experience a variety of surface and borehole geophysical methods and geotechnical methods first hand, as well as participate in interactive discussion sessions. Invitations will be sent out closer to the date. This is an event not to be missed.

resource05, 13th - 15th September at BRE Watford

The event, which focuses upon renewable and innovative energy efficiency technologies in buildings, has quickly established itself as one of the leading events in the construction industry’s calendar. However, increased concern about the momentum of climate change, together with the new building regulations and the European building performance directive, mean the 2005 event will draw more visitors than ever.

Lankelma will be bringing a truck to demonstrate the installation of VSHEs.

Civils 2005, 22nd - 24th November, Olympia, London

Civils is the UK’s largest exhibition to encompass the needs of the civil engineering industry while reflecting on opportunities available within the sector. Re-launched for 2005, Civils has a new focus on networking, responding to the way this industry likes to do business.

CPT Seminars

The joint seminars presented by Pennine and Lankelma have previously been well attended by engineers and technicians from consultants, contractors and house builders alike. These half-day events introduce the topics of cone penetration testing (CPT) and ground improvement techniques; there is a workshop session to enable participants to gain first hand experience of the interpretation and implementation of the techniques.

New Australian Truck

Lankelma has a new truck available in Australia through a partnership with IGS from Brisbane. More news will follow later. For more information about IGS go to: www.insitu.com.au

Lankelma Ltd Continues Growth In Marine Site Investigation

Lankelma continues to invest in the very latest CPT & soil investigation technology, making sure it remains the UK’s number one CPT provider.

The newest additions to join the company’s range of equipment include a Datem Neptune3000 CPT unit and the Datem Resistivity Data Acquisition System. Datem’s miniature coiled rod cpt system: Neptune3000, will enable Lankelma to perform piezocone CPT’s in water depths of up to 3,000 metres. Other features include its compact and easily deployed sub-sea frame, automatic safety cut outs and an easy to operate Windows™ based PC control. Lankelma will use the system on future projects including submarine cable, pipeline route investigations, seabed anchoring assessments and shallow subsea foundation studies.

The resistivity data acquisition system works on the principal of passing a high current from one contact on a streamed cable, through the soil to a return contact. This effective piece of equipment will carry out projects in water depths of up to 2,500 metres. Both systems come with dedicated LARS systems, which allows Lankelma to work with vessels of opportunity with or without an ‘A’ frame.

Lankelma entered the marine site investigation market in 2000 and since then it has carried out numerous successful jobs. Projects in the last year have included vibrocoring off the Isle of Wight for Wessex Archaeology and in the Thames Estuary for the Port of London, as well as performing over 100 top push CPTs to depths of up to 50 metres around the UK for clients such as Barrow Windfarm and Gunfleet Windfarm both using Seacore jackup platforms. In addition to these projects, Lankelma has also carried out a series of cable route surveys in partnership with Gardline’s geotechnical arm, Gardline Geosciences Limited.

Lankelma’s portfolio boasts clients such as Shell, BP, Maersk, Petro Canada, PLA, Westminster Dredging, Bouyges and Arups.
