Inclinometer systems are used to monitor deformation in the ground. The technique involves installing plastic inclinometer casing in a near vertical borehole that passes through a zone of suspected movement, with the bottom of the casing anchored in stable ground. The inclinometer probe is then used to measure movement of the casing from its original position over time and hence measure any ground movement.
Typically, inclinometer casing is installed in conventional boreholes or windowless sample holes and grouted in place to ensure close contact with the ground. Using standard CPT equipment, Lankelma can offer its “Push-in” installation method, offering a number of benefits over conventional methods.
- Installation is fast, with verticality and alignment control throughout, with no spoil, using self-contained equipment that is mobilised easily to site
- The casing is pushed rather than hammered into position, reducing the chance of damage
- The pointed drive tip provides excellent bottom fixity for the casing
- The casing is in close contact with the surrounding soil, almost totally eliminating the need to provide a representative grout to fill any annulus between the casing and the side of the hole
- A highly accurate soil profile can be established at the inclinometer location to aid data interpretation.
Inclinometer systems are used for the measurement of lateral earth movements which can occur in landslides, unstable slopes, dams, embankments and landfill cells. They are also used to measure deflections in the walls of excavations, shafts, tunnels and in caissons, piles and sheet piling.
