The versatility of CPT (cone penetration testing) allows an ever-growing range of utilisation methods. Rams can be mounted on jack-up platforms, crawlers and subsea rovers, to name a few. Cantilever frame The cantilever frame allows CPT to be performed close to quay walls. It has also been used to perform wing cone tests to proof lime cement columns on the CTRL where tests had to be carried out in a pit. The frame and CPT rams were craned into the pit. |

Subsea CPT crawler unit Rams were mounted on a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) to perform tests for an outfall extension in the surfzone area at Woolacombe Bay. Read more >> |
CPT rig for the Antarctic Lankelma designed and constructed in-house, a CPT rig for the Antarctic. At the time of writing (October '09) it is ready for shipping to the Antarctic where it will be used to assess the subgrade strengths of polar snow for the construction of infrastructure works. Adrian McCallum of the Scott Polar Research Institute will keep us posted. read more >> |
Horizontal in-situ testing
Lankelma has developed rams that can test horizontally - UK10. They were developed for use in the underground (project example below). Rigs UK14 and UK12 were developed specifically for rail use whilst UK7, the bogskipper and its big brother, UK8, were developed for soft peaty terrain. |
Selection of bespoke ground investigations: Horizontal testing in the London Underground CPTs were not required to be taken vertically down as usual but at a nearly horizontal incline through the sidewall of an underground tunnel. This was an interesting challenge that finally led to the development of UK10. Woolacombe surf zone An intertidal marine ground investigation for an outfall extension project, using a subsea ROV crawler unit. Thames development The crawler was loaded on to a landing craft at the south side of the river at low tide. At high tide the pontoons were sailed over to the north side where the crawler could be driven off 2hrs before lowtide and driven on 2 hrs past lowtide. River at Gainsborough Using seismic testing from the cantilever frame, an investigation of the river bed beneath a sheet pile wall to determine depth to rock head and position of the pile toe.
