Between 2001 and 2003, Edmund Nuttall and Arup were jointly contracted by the Environmental Agency to create a scheme to relieve Wakefield of repeated flood events of the River Calder.   Some £7M was invested into the scheme which saw wastelands re-created into water reservoirs using a variety of ‘soft’ engineering schemes.

However with the extent of the flooding which occurred throughout July 2007, a land slip occurred on the Wakefield Spillway adjacent to the old West Riding Quarry.

To gain  information on the the ground conditions underlying the the slip area, Edmund Nuttall subcontracted Lankelma to undertake CPT (cone penetration testing) and to provide MOSTAP samples.  Lankelma used a 2.1 tonne, LWC-100, rubber-tracked mini crawler-mounted CPT unit to undertake the required works.

Scope of work

The scope of work consisted  of 5 No. CPT tests, down to depths of 12.01m, 1 No. CPTU (piezocone) test to a depth of 9.66m and 2 No. MOSTAP samples from ground level to depths between Ground Level and 4.0m depth. All works were completed within two working days (on time and within budget) with all exploratory locations co-ordinated and levelled by the CPT operators upon completion of the works.
