TRAINEE HGV AND PLANT MECHANIC

Job title:  Trainee HGV and Plant Mechanic
Department:  Workshop – Technical
Reports to:  Workshop Supervisor and General Manager
Hours:  45 hours per week, core hours between 8am to 5pm

A role working initially as a trainee within the Workshop Team. The position will assist the Workshop Team with HGV and plant mechanics, including vehicle fleet inspections, diagnostic testing and carrying out servicing, maintenance and repairs, to help ensure that HGV/Plant/Equipment is maintained and repaired as and when required.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES 

Supporting and learning from the existing Workshop Team in all aspects of in-house repair and maintenance of HGV rigs, crawlers, mobile rigs, plant, vans and equipment:

  • Vehicle checks – ensure correct operation and condition of controls, lights, and tyres etc
  • Servicing vehicles – check and replace parts, fluids, filters
  • Identify and rectify vehicle defects in line with current legislation
  • Use diagnostic equipment and assist in fault diagnosis process
  • Inspect and maintain hydraulic components
  • Inspect and prepare vehicles for MOT
  • Condition and maintain tyre stock
  • Adhere to safety data sheets and COSHH guidelines
  • Adhere to H&S policy
  • General housekeeping – ensure workshop facilities, equipment and tools are kept clean, tidy and maintained
  • Safe use of tools and equipment
  • Ensure all vehicle defects are reported to Workshop Supervisor

ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Team player
  • Self-motivated, attention to detail
  • Adaptable
  • Good communication skills
  • Passionate about offering the best level of service and have the ability to work independently after training

DESIRABLE SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Experience and/or knowledge of working on HGV’s or other large vehicles
  • Qualifications in motor vehicles (NVQ, City and Guilds etc.)
  • Experience and/or knowledge of plant (heavy & light)
  • Welding and fabrication skills
  • Hydraulic knowledge
  • Electrical knowledge
